Free or Low Cost Treatment Resources for Anxiety/OCD

Hi Everyone,

During the current pandemic, finding help for an anxiety disorder can be challenging as most therapists are busy and also often have long wait lists. I get calls almost everyday from potential new clients and I just don’t have any room for more clients. And sometimes the anxiety doesn’t require professional help and can be addressed in other, usually less expensive, ways. With the above in mind, I thought I’d share some of the less expensive resources that you might try instead of, or in addition to, finding a therapist. And just in case you do want to find a therapist, here are some resources for that as well. I hope you find these helpful.

                                               OCD/Anxiety Resources

Books

I’ve written before about some of my favorite books on anxiety/OCD and so I’ll just add two newer books that have only recently been published that I think are definitely worth reading:

The Monkey Mind Workout for Uncertainty: Break Free from Anxiety and Build Resilience in 30 Days!

Uncertainty is often at the heart of most anxiety disorders so if you find yourself struggling with constant worries about what might happen in the future, all the possible things that could go wrong (the Monkey Mind), then this book might just help. In a fun but helpful way the author guides you through a 30 day program for accepting uncertainty and living a happier, more fulfilling life.

The Self-Compassion Workbook for OCD

If you have OCD, then you know that it usually is a package deal - you get to struggle with obsessions and compulsions and are also likely to be exceptionally hard on yourself. In a clear and thorough way the author guides you through lessons and exercises designed to help you become kinder to yourself.

Podcasts (there are many good podcasts out there and to keep it simple, I’ve chosen to just highlight a couple of my favorite ones):

The OCD Stories

Your Anxiety Toolkit

Associations (all four of these associations are excellent places to learn more about the various anxiety disorders and they all also have therapist locator services):

International Obsessive Compulsive Disorders Foundation (IOCDF.org)

Anxiety and Depression Association of America (ADAA.org)

Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapy (ABCT.org)

Association for Contextual Behavioral Science (contextualscience.org)

Blogs (there are many good blogs out there and, again, to keep this simple I’ve chosen just a few of my favorite ones - most of these therapists also offer treatment for anxiety/OCD):

John Hershfield

Kimberly Quinlan

Sally Winston

Martin Seif

David Carbonell

Finding a Therapist (useful places/ways to start looking for a therapist):

Psychology Today

NOCD

Betterhelp

My book (This is a short ebook I wrote several years ago to address the problem of finding a suitably trained therapist to treat anxiety/OCD. I was getting many calls from potential clients about this process and so this book is intended to help you find someone to work with. I go into some detail about what to look for in a therapist.)

If you happen to live in Oregon then OCDOregon is another local helpful resource. Many states have an affiliate program connected to the IOCDF and they often are very helpful with resources in the state where you live. You can check if your state has an affiliate here. If you know of any other helpful low cost or free resources that could be added to my list above, please let me know. You may know of other people struggling with anxiety/OCD and so you might consider forwarding this post to them. And, as always, let me know if you have any questions or topics you’d like me to cover in future posts.

Some of the above are affiliate links and if you buy something through the link provided I receive a small portion of the purchase price.

Stay safe,

Dr Bob
